Roswell was born about 1808 in NY. He married Semanthe[Samantha] Morgan Sept 10, 1831 in Loraine co Ohio. Children: Tennant, Addison, Griffith, Jane, Amanda, Festus, and Permelia.

They are descended from Gerard Spencer, one of three brothers who came over from Wales to Connecticut in the 1600s. they were in Middlesex co, East Haddam Twp. Connecticut. LeDespencer was the original name. 1 Gerard Spencer, 2 William, 3 James, 4 Judah, 5 Eleal or Eliel, 6 Roswell Eliel Spencer.

Baldwin, 5. Daniel, 6. Jason, 7. Lucy, 8. Rhoda, 9. Sarah, 10. Roswell and 11. Eliel. Apparently Roswell came to Lorain County around 1830 in the company of his brother, Eliel. Eliel married Angeline Rockwood in 1833. Roswell and family moved to Monroe County, MI around 1850 and lived in Milan township. Semanthe was born in 1809 in Chatham, Middlesex co CT. Semanthe and her daughter and a grandson went to the Poor Farm at Ann Arbor after Roswell's death, she died June 19, 1895. there is no longer any cemetery there, a highway goes thru and the land is a park.
