Staff Sgt. Casey J. Grochowiak, 34, of San Diego, Calif., died Aug. 30 in Malajat, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when insurgents attacked his unit with an improvised explosive device. He were assigned to the 1st Battalion, 22nd Infantry Regiment, 1st Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, Fort Carson, Colo. He joined the Army in September 2009 and had been in Afghanistan since July, with a previous one year stint from 2005-2006. He was previously in Iraq, and he joined the unit in May.
