Javan Coward, 90 year old citizen of Jackson County, died Tuesday afternoon, January 28, 1941 at his home on Caney Fork, following a brief illness of influenza.
Mr. Coward, one of the community’s oldest citizens, and a member of one of the pioneer families, was a prominent farmer and stock man for many years. Born and reared in this county, he spent his entire life here, and had many friends throughout western North Carolina. Mr. Coward is survived by his widow, who is also 90 years of age, being only a few months younger than her husband; by three daughters, Mrs. Alonzo M. [Nellie] Henson of Sylva, Mrs. Will [Arlesia] Brown of Caney Fork, and Mrs. William H. [Emma] Smith of East LaPorte, a large number of grandchildren and other relatives also survive.
Funeral services were conducted yesterday afternoon.
