MANSFIELD - MARY JANE ARMSTRONG HENNEY, 92, of Mansfield, died Friday, October 10, 2008, in Woodlawn Health Care and Rehabilitation Center.

She was born September 17, 1916 in Ashland to Blanche (Pifer) and Elzie Edwin Armstrong. She graduated from Ashland High School and Ashland (College) University. She also attended Wooster College and Case Western Reserve.

On July 8, 1939, she married Frank "Fritz" Henney in Ashland Presbyterian Church. Her husband preceded her in death on July 7, 2006. The couple were also members of First Presbyterian Church, Mansfield.

Mary Jane taught elementary school in Ashland City Schools and Madison Local School District. She also played viola with the Ashland Symphony and various other symphonies in Ohio.

After teaching and performing, she worked as volunteer chairman for the American Red Cross-Richland County, helped found the Ohio Genealogical Society Library, where she also served as chairman of volunteers, and on the board of directors until her retirement in the 1980's. During that time she taught genealogy skills to many people. She was also documented as a member of both First Families of Ohio and First Families of Richland County.

A local noted historian, Mary Jane also wrote a column titled "Once Upon Another Time..." published in the Mansfield News Journal, as well as compiling several books on Richland County history based on documented history of the area. Additionally, she compiled indices for decades of local newspaper articles. She also served on the board of directors of the Charles Albert Tindley Foundation, which started the first lending library for children enrolled at Richland County Head Start. Mary Jane was also a member of Roseland Grange.

Mary Jane is survived by two sons and daughters-in-law, John and Rose Ann (Hartman) Henney of Mansfield, and Joe and Ruth (Hartman) Henney of Westerville; grandchildren and great grandchildren, Pamela Henney of Galion, Patricia, Jeffery and Chengli Payton of Madison, New Jersey, Chris, Beth and Aidan Henney of Bexley, Sarah, Chad, Tyler and Jenna Zimmerly of Shreve, Michael, Bobbi and Lilly Henney of Galena, Scott, Carmen and Kallyn Henney of Manchester, Iowa. She is also survived by her brother, Carl and Ruth Armstrong, several nieces and nephews; and dear friends, Ron Simon and Bob Soulen.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents, her sister and brother-in-law, Helen and Dr. Harold Oyster and a niece, Judy Maxwell.

A graveside service will be held Monday, October 13, 2008, in Oak Grove Memorial Park. Pastor Robert Soulen will officiate.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to First Presbyterian Church, Hospice of North Central Ohio, Richland County Chapter of the American Red Cross or Ohio Genealogical Society Library may be made through the funeral home.
