Marine City - Meta M. "Grandma Gee" Gastineau, 97, of Marine City, loving mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, aunt and friend, passed away on Wednesday, August 8, 2007, following an eight-month battle with cancer, in the home of her daughter. Meta was born in Detroit on May 18, 1910, a daughter to the late John F. and Elvana (Visger) Jaissle. She married Lote G. Gastineau on March 13, 1937 in Detroit and he preceded her in death on September 9, 1959. Meta was an inspiration to everyone who was lucky enough to know her. She was always upbeat and smiling and she put a smile on everyone's face. She loved traveling and her two favorite places to go were "Krakin Nee Lodge" near Grayling and to Curtis in the Upper Peninsula. She enjoyed visiting casinos and just plain old togetherness with family and friends. Meta was also a member of Cherry Beach Seniors and she was a great cook, an avid reader and loved music. Meta was a Nurses' Aide at River District Hospital for many years and always loved taking care of someone else. She also helped tutor children at Holy Cross Elementary School. Meta worked for 14 years at the Little Grocery in East China and was a member of Holy Cross Catholic Church and the Daughters of Isabella, St. Agatha Circle, at Holy Cross Church. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the pride and joy of her life.
Meta is survived by her daughters, Marie (Jim) Krause and Grace (the late John F. ) Halpin, all of East China; grandchildren, John (Mary) Halpin, Cindy Halpin (Eric Kruger), Daniel (Lynn) Halpin, James (Jennifer) Krause, Jeffrey (Stefanie) Krause, Jason Krause, Kenneth, Steven, and Michael Gastineau; 6 special, wonderful great-grandchildren;, sister-in-law, Bernadette Jaissle; many loving nieces and nephews of whom she cared about deeply; and 3 wonderful caregivers, Sheila Durkee, Barb Cameron and Bev Pemberton, of Harbor Health Care.
Meta was preceded in death by her husband; son, Lee G. Gastineau; her parents; her sister, Grace Healy; brothers, John F., Walter J., Milton W. and Lewis E. Jaissle; and special son-in-law, John F. Halpin.
Services are Monday 10:30 a.m. in the Bower-Rose Funeral Home, Marine City, followed by 11 a.m. Mass in Holy Cross Church, Marine City, with Monsignor George T. Browne presiding. Internment will be in the church cemetery.
Visiting in the funeral home is Saturday 7 - 9 p.m. and Sunday 2 - 4 and 6 - 9 p.m. with Rosary to be prayed Sunday at 7 p.m.

Marine City - Meta M.
