Immigrated to the US with parents and brother Johann (aka John) and sister Josepha (aka Josephine) thru port of New York City--with a destination of Syracuse, NY--on 15 May 1894 aboard the steamship ALLER out of Bremen, Germany on ticket #0975.

***Anthony Stier is my gg grandfather. I have his discharge papers from the Army hanging on my wall. He was 19 years 2 months and 24 days old when he enlisted in the Army.

He was a very proud man and loved to be in local parades in his uniform years later.

*He was one of only 17 survivors of the Battle at Balangiga that took place in the Philippines on September 28, 1901.

*He was one of only four survivors of Company C 9 Regt Infantry.

*He was the only survivor from Syracuse.

MEDAL AND PURSE

Anthony Stier Appreciated by His North Side Friends

Friends of Anthony Stier of 134 Mary st., one of the heroes of the Philippine war, met at Gang's hall last night to do honor to the young soldier. A handsome gold medal on which is inscribed the name of his company and the regimental insignia together with a purse of $50 was presented to Mr. Stier as a mark of the esteem in which he is held. M. Kohles presented the medal and John E. Kalupp the purse. The company roster and certificates of honorable mention received by the gallant private were exhibited in frames in the hall. Private Stier was in the battle of Tien-Twain, China as well as in many important engagements in the Philippines and the massacre of Balangiga,

He was a member of the Syracuse Swabian Society.

Anthony Stier dies; was trolley driver


Anthony Stier of 177 E. Molloy Rd., Mattydale,
a former motorman for the Syracuse Rapid Transit Co.
for 29 years, died yesterday in the Veteran's
Adminstration Hospital in Buffalo. He was 86
years old.
Born in Germany, Mr. Stier lived in Mattydale for
10 years.
A veteran of the Spanish-American war, he was
one of the few remaining survivors of the
Samar Island Massacre during the Phillipine
Rebellion.He was an honorary member of the Mattydale
Post, VFW.
Surviving are two sons, Anthony and Ulrich Stier; a
sister, Mrs. Josephine Golum; 11 grandchildren and
27 great-grandchildren.
Services will be 9 a.m. Wednesday at the Leitten Funeral Home,
Brewerton Road, Mattydale.
A requiem high Mass will be offered at 9:30 a.m.
St. Margaret's Church, Mattydale. Burial will be
in Assumption Cemetery.
Calling hours are 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. tomorrow.
