The son of William & Elizabeth Barnes (Black) Ailes, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Drumore Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, although he seems to have lived most of his life in Peach Bottom Township, York County. He stood 6' 4" tall and had light hair and gray eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he was drafted at the stated age of twenty-two in York County November 12, 1862, although given the relatively late date of his conscription and the fact that he is in the 1860 census living in Lancaster County, he may have enlisted as a substitute. He mustered into federal service at York November 14 as a private with Co. I, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"), and detached to the provost guard February 19, 1863, probably because he was suffering with dysentery. He honorably discharged with his company July 28, 1863, in York.

He married Martha Jane Carrick December 11, 1867, in Philadelphia and fathered the children you see linked below. He died at the reported age of 79-8-28 from "gangrene of feet" with "arteriosclerosis" a contributing factor.

The birth date used here is calculated from his stated age at death. The fact that it is in disagreement with the tombstone birth year was common in an era before birth certificates existed. This is not to say, however, that the reported age at death is correctly stated, but so far it is the only evidence available for his birthdate.
