Susan, daughter of Albert and Sarah Schooling Boswell, was born April 22, 1861, in a log cabin near Mt. Etna, Iowa, and passed away at her home in Corning, Iowa, Friday evening, December 30, 1938, at 7:40 P.M., aged 77 years,8 months and 8 days, having lived her entire life in Adams County. Her parents came from Missouri, and were among the pioneers of the country, coming by ox team and covered wagon. She was married March 25, 1885, at the home of her parents, to T. E. Richards. Rev. Cloud of the Baptist Church performing the ceremony.
They lived in Lincoln Township until December 1904, when they moved to their farm three miles north of Corning. They resided there until November 1914, then moved to their home in north Corning where the remaining years of their lives were spent, and where they celebrated their Golden Wedding Anniversary 4 years ago with all their children and grandchildren present.
She is survived by three sons, four daughters, eighteen grandchildren and eleven great grandchildren. The children are: Walter H., Corning; Ethel Asman, Des Moines: Maggie Farris, Homer O., Corning; Ada Palmer, Nodaway; Burton N., DeSoto, Iowa; Gladys Enarson, Corning. She was preceded in death by her husband, who passed away February 6, 1938, and one daughter, Ellen Preston, who died September 12, 1918, also three grandchildren. She also leaves to mourn their loss 2 sisters and 2 brothers, Mrs. Ella Bickford, Creston; Mrs. Margaret Over, J. A. Boswell, Mt. Etna; and C. M. Boswell, Des Moines.
She united with the United Brethren Church early in life, always being a true Christian, and after she was unable to go to church she always enjoyed worship services over the radio. Her life was quiet and unassuming, her chief interest being in her family and home where she tenderly cared for two of the granchildren, Wayne Preston and Eleanor Preston Hatton who were left motherless when small. In spite of her many years of suffering, she was always patient and cheerful and doing for others to the utmost of her ability. She leaves a host of friends and neighbors who mourn her passing.
Funeral services were held at 2:00 o'clock Monday afternoon, January 2, at the M.E. Church in Corning, the services being in charge of Rev. W. J. Todd, assisted by Rev.J. H. Krenmyre. Interment was made in the Walnut Grove Cemetery.
