Services were held Friday morning at Holy Cross Church in Hopkinton, for Mrs. Matilda Converse, 59, widow of William Converse of Fort Jackson, who passed away in Canton, Tuesday evening after an extended illness. She was born in Norfolk, Aug. 9, 1881, one of eight children of the late Frank and Josephine Guyette Fayette of Brasher.
Her early life was spent in Norfolk and Brasher. In April, 1898, she married Mr. Converse, a farmer of Fort Jackson, the ceremony being performed by Rev. Mr. Tooke of the Fort Jackson Methodist Church.
Five children were born to the couple, a baby, Lawrence, died in infancy in 1902 and a daughter, Miss Beatrice, 16, was drowned while swimming in the St. Lawrence River at Waddington in 1924.
Mr. Converse passed away Dec. 8, 1938. Mrs. Converse is survived by a daughter, Miss Alberta Converse of Hopkinton, two sons, John W. Converse, Hopkinton, Leo J. Converse, Potsdam, and
several grandchildren.
Rev. Leo Murphy of Hopkinton officiated at the service. Burial was made in Hopkinton-Ft. Jackson cemetery.
Mrs. Converse was a sister-in-law of Albion Converse of Winthrop.
