HOIST CAGE CRUSHES UTAH FOREMAN, 38

BONANZA,, Uintah County -- A shift foreman for American Gilsonite Co. was crushed to death in a hoist shaft 650 feet below ground here Friday at 8:30 a.m.

THE BODY of Clifton Nickell, 38, a six-year employe of AGC, was wedged between a hoist cage and timbers of a development drift level 80 to 100 feet above the bottom of the shaft.

Jack Ruppe, a fellow employe, found the foreman's body after the cage jammed vhen he tried to move it to the surface. It is an automatic lift, operated without a hoist man.

COMPANY AIDES were attempting late Friday to deternine details of the accident.

Mr. Nickell was born Jan. 31, 1S23, in Vernal, son of James Chilton and Ida May Williams Nickell.

HE MARRIED Elaine Parent, Jan. 15, 1542, in Vernal. She died May 18, 1950. He married Melba Lee Miller July 20, 1950, in Vernal.

SURVIVORS INCLUDE his widow, sons and daughters, Jeannette Kathleen Nickell, Monterey Park, California; Bill Nickell, all of Vernal; a stepdaughter, Miss Connie Miller, Vernal.

ALSO SURVIVING are his mother of Riverside, father of Vernal and the following brothers and sisters: Mrs. Thil (Elda) Nash, Roseville, Calif.; Mrs. Harold (Verda) McKee, Riverside; Mrs. William (Lela) Tschanz, M o n t e r e y Park; Glenn Nickell, Lynwood, Calif.; Mrs. Lynn (Lorna) Holmes, Mrs. Boyd (Erma) Merrell and Dallas Nickell, all of Vernal.

FUNERAL RITES will be conducted Monday at 11 a.m in the Vernal First Ward Chapel, Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.
