A handwritten note done around 1970 by his grandson, who was born in 1880, said John was born in 1797 and died in 1881.

Records have John Allen born in New York or Sutton, Missisquoi, Quebec the fourth of twelve children of John Allen and Magdalena "Delany" Andrew. He married Lucinda Russell March 11, 1828 in New York.
