Claude was the son of George W. Owens and Louisa Ann Gattis. Louisa died when Claude was only two years old and he went to live with her parents in Gattis Town in Lincoln County, TN.
Claude was married to Nancy Carnelia Spencer, who was better known as "Neelie". She was the daughter of James Franklin and Bettie (Elizabeth) Copeland Spencer. Together they had six sons and a thriving business making chenille bedspreads and related items. They owned Owens Manufacturing located on South Anderson Street, just across from their residence.
In addition to Claude keeping the machines in working order, he also shopped and cooked for the family of eight.
Several of the six sons worked at the family business. Shown at right, some are known only to me by their nicknames: Pete, Charles, Click, Virgil, Wilfred (Gube) and Roy.
The photo lower right was made at the company picnic, the summer of 1949. Claude, with his grandson, Don Allen Owens and great-niece, Reva Gale Eley.
