FOUNDER OF THE BROADWAY, ROY E. MORSE, DIES AT 92

Roy E. Morse, founder of the Broadway Department Store, and long one of Eugene's most respected business leaders, is dead at the age of 92.

He died in his sleep Sunday afternoon at Cascade Manor health center. He had been transferred there from his apartment at Cascade Manor, 65 W. 30th Ave., after becoming increasingly weak Friday night.

Morse was born June 15, 1881, in Mondova, Wis., and had been a resident of Eugene for the past 45 years. He founded The Broadway in 1925 and remained active in the store long beyond normal retirement age.

In 1967, he turned over ownership to his son, Max, and his general manager, Ralph Robinson, purchased the entire ownership of the store.

On a business trip in Vancouver, Wash., Robinson mourned Morse's passing.

"He was like a father to me. Really, we never once had an argument. He had a tremendous feeling for everyone. The customer always came first."

Morse is survived by his son, Roy Maxwell Morse, of Portland; three grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. His wife and former partner in the store, Grace, died in October 1966. They had been married 63 years.

Morse was named Eugene's senior first citizen in 1962. He was a life member of the Salvation Army, a past president of the YMCA here, was long active in the Eugene Chamber of Commerce and the United Appeal, and was the oldest member of Eugene Downtown Lions Club.

Even in recent years, Morse attended Lions Club meetings and just one month ago, the was guest of honor for a 92nd birthday celebration at the Broadway.

Funeral services will be Thursday at 10:30 a.m. in Lounsbury-Musgrove Funeral Chapel, with concluding services at Rest-Haven Memorial Park.

Robertson said The Broadway will be closed Thursday morning in the founder's memory and so his associates may attend the services.

Contributions in Morse's memory may be made to the Cascade Manor Memorial Fund. Morse was one of the first two occupants of the nonprofit retirement home in south Eugene, moving in Feb. 1, 1967.
