Frances Marie Hoffarth was born April 25, 1919 in New York City, New York. In 1921, Frances traveled on the Orphan Train to Casselton, North Dakota, and was formally adopted by Frank and Josephine Schuler. She was raised and educated at Mount Carmel, North Dakota. She married Michael A. Hoffarth on October 11, 1938, and they lived on a farm west of Mount Carmel until 1954, when they moved to Langdon, North Dakota.
While in Langdon, Frances was an active member at St. Alphonsus Church, sang with the Sweet Adalines, was a member of Catholic Daughters and crowned Mrs. Barley Queen 1988. Mike and Frances ran Mike's Bike Shop until they sold the shop in 1985. Frances enjoyed singing in the church choir, setting up the altar for mass, visiting the sick and distributing communion. She participated in many Orphan Train Reunions over the years, and got to meet others who also came to the Midwest. She loved those opportunities and acquired many friendships. Frances was an excellent homemaker, an avid quilt maker and baker. She enjoyed keeping a journal and did so faithfully most of her life. Frances also had a love of flowers and the gift of growing African violets.
She is survived by her ten children: Dennis (Janet) Hoffarth, San Diego, CA, Mary Fran (Vernon) Moore, Alexandria, VA, Al (Mary Jo) Hoffarth, Grand Forks, ND, Lou Wagner, Grand Forks, ND, William (Sharon) Hoffarth, Monticello, MN, Vince (Amelia) Hoffarth, Apple Valley, MN, Alice Dacus, Grand Forks, ND, Deborah (Robert) Demmers, Grand Forks, ND, Michael (Janelle) Hoffarth, Wahpeton, ND, Stephan (Julie) Hoffarth, Grand Forks, ND; thirty-four grandchildren and twelve great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Michael, daughter Theresa (William) Lavioe; two grandchildren; a sister, Helen Boesl; brothers, John Schuler and Bill Thompson; son-in-law Charles Wagner.
Mass of Christian Burial: 12:00 p.m. Tuesday in St. Alphonsus Catholic Church, Langdon, ND. Visitation: 5 to 7 p.m. Monday with a 7:00 p.m. prayer service and a 4:30 p.m. rosary service in Holy family Catholic Church, Grand Forks, ND and 2 hr. before services in Langdon on Tuesday.
