NEWKIRK — Alberta Katherine Alexander, longtime resident of Newkirk, died Saturday, Sept. 3, 2010, in Newkirk Nursing Center. She was 83.

The daughter of Charles Edmond and Millie Lee McInnis, Bertie was born Aug. 29, 1923, in Bixby. She grew up and received her education in Sapulpa and Mounds.

On Dec. 21, 1943, Alberta and Edward Ray Alexander were married in Sapulpa. They made their home in various states from 1944-46, while her husband served in the U.S. Army. Following his discharge, they established their home in Arkansas City, Kan. In 1954 they moved to Blackwell for a year while she attended nurses training in Blackwell General Hospital. Upon receiving her licensed practical nursing certification the family returned to Arkansas City, and in 1956 they moved to Newkirk where they have since resided. Mr. Alexander died Sept. 29, 1988.

Alberta's work history includes employment in the Arkansas City Memorial Hospital, working in the Emergency Room and Delivery Room. Later she transferred to the Intensive Care Unit. She was also employed part-time in a nursing home.

In earlier years Alberta attended the Baptist Church and Calvary Temple. She enjoyed bowling, crocheting and knitting. She excelled in cooking and baking bread, as well as canning, jelly, jam and ketchup making. She also enjoyed reading her Bible.

She is survived by her children, Jimmy and Connie Alexander of Ponca City, Sandra and Milon Hoepfinger of Newkirk and Domingo "Tony" Perez of Enid; her brothers and a sister-in-law, Paul and Lucille Bell and Basil Bell, all of Checotah; her sisters, Lorene Gildhouse and Joyce Lampe, both of Checotah and Barbara Skinner of Ponca City; her grandchildren, Richard and Jamie Alexander of Broken Arrow, Cheryl and Ty Cobb of Edmond, Phillip and Pam Perez of Enid, Paul Perez of Bixby, Katherine Moreau of Newkirk and Amanda and Jason Lunn of Ponca City; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Services have been scheduled for 10 a.m. Tuesday, Sept. 7, in the Miller-Stahl Funeral Chapel with the Revs. Clifford Johnson and Robert Johnson of The Tabernacle of Blackwell. Interment will follow in Newkirk Cemetery.
