Barstow was educated in public schools in Massachusetts and studied law before working as a clerk in Boston. In 1878 he moved to California and was admitted to the state bar. In 1903 he moved to Los Angeles and continued to practice law and was a member of the Union League and Gamut Club. He married Mary Elizabeth Variel on October 10, 1879.
