William was born near Businessburg, Ohio, the youngest of William and Mary Carle. His father died of consumption when Will was a toddler, and Mary raised the children by herself, with help from family. When he was 20, he married Mary Eliza King, and they settled into a home at Businessburg and started their family. Their first three daughters were born in Ohio. In the 1880s, they moved to near Burlington, Kansas, where their youngest daughter was born, and he worked as a blacksmith.

Eventually they moved to St. Maries, Idaho, where they had a small farm.

Will and Eliza were born just two weeks apart, and died less than three months apart.
