1840 - Louis was the son of Samuel and Rebecca Ann Gardner Rowe, born Jan 25, 1840 in Massillon, OH.

1862 - Lewis enlisted 15 August as a Private in Lagrange, IN. He was 5 Ft 11 3/4 inches tall, dark complexion, brown eyes and black hair. Lewis was a Private in the 100th Indiana Infantry, Company C from LaGrange Co., Indiana. [Thanks to C.R. Mattox who wrote a book on the history of the 100th Indiana Infantry and shared some information of his service and marriage.]

He had been a farmer before enlistment.

1864 - 5 July mustered out of the service --- "wound of left forearm, 23 months service."

1867 - He married Olive Jeanette* Wilcox Dec 31, 1867, at the old Sturgis Hotel in Sturgis, MI. Jeannie had previously been married to Henry Greely, who died July 1858, cause unknown.

[15913 - Eddy Family of America Supplement 1968, Jane is listed as: "Jane or Jennie Wilcox ... married Rowe." Her death records state father: "Mr. Wilcox" and born at "Conny, PA" which is Corry, PA."]

1870, Lagrange census, Lewis is found as Lewis "Row", 30, working on the railroad with Jane 35, keeping house.

1871 - Their son Leo Daniel W. Rowe was born 2 April 1871. They also had a son Luke who was stillborn 12 Dec 1868 and a daughter Lulu who died in infancy."

1880 - Lagrange census, Lewis "N. Row", 40, b. 1840 OH, Jane Row, 46, b. NY, Leo D. W. Row 9, b. IN.

1910 - Lagrange census, Lewis M. Rowe, 70, b. 1840 OH, Jennie W. Rowe, 76, b. PA.

1918 - Lewis M. was in and out of hospital*** - US National Home 1866-1938 Dayton, OH -Pension Cert: 34755.

It states: disability when admitted: Lt. Inguinal hernia, defective vision, GELW Lt Forearm, arterio sclerosis, etc., b. Oh, 78, 5' 11 3/4", dark complexion, hazel eye, hair - gray, could read and write, Prost reg, farmer, Zephyrhills, FL, married - Jennie Rowe; Pasco County, FL, pension $30.00. Ad to CB, May 28, 1918. Disch - July 18, 1921 at request, Rcad to CB June 22, 1921, Disch, Aug 17, 1921 at Request.

1920 - Zephyrhills, FL census, Lewis M. Rowe, 79, b. OH, Jennie O. Rowe, 86, b. PA, 1834.

1923 - FL Death Records: Lewis M. Rowe b. OH, 25 Jan 1840. Widowed. Event Date: 01 Feb 1923, 83y, Zephyrhills, FL. Occupation: Retired. Burial Date: 02 Feb 1923. Burial Place: Zephyrhills, Fl. Father's Name: Samuel Rowe.

From his obituary: [Newspaper unknown. It probably was from the Zephyrhills, Pasco County newspaper or Tampa, FL paper]

"Lewis N. Rowe, for many years a resident of Lagrange, died at Zephyrhills, Florida, February 2, aged eighty-three years and eight days.

Mr Rowe was born near Massillion, Ohio in January, 1846 [error 1840] and when seven years of age came with his parents to Pretty Prairie. From there the family moved to a farm south of Langrange. In August 1862, he enlisted in the One Hundredth regiment, Indiana volunteer infantry, with which he served two years, receiving a wound in the arm at the battle of Missionary Ridge.

December 31, 1867, he was married to Olive Jeanette* Wilcox of Ohio** who died a few weeks ago at the Zephyrhills sanitarium, where both were being cared for. Two children were born to them, Leo D.W., who survives. His brother Samuel Rowe and sister, Mrs. Delilah Rowe of Lagrange, survive him and a number of nephews and nieces.

Mr. Rowe was in Lagrange last fall, in attendance on Corn School.

He was a member of Farragut post, G.A.R., at Zephyrhills, and his comrades laid his body to rest with the ritual of the patriotic order."

She was the daughter of Daniel Wilcox and Olive Eddy Wilcox and was on the 1850 Columbus, PA census with them as JANE AGE 16, BORN PA. 1860 on Columbus, PA census with her sister Maria Wilcox Rickerson under the name of JANE GREELEY, WIDOWED, b. PA.

NOTE 2: **Various census after marriage to Lewis state she was born in PA. Example 1900 census of Lagrange, states name as Olive J. b. 1834 PA. 1920 census of Pasco Cty, FL has her as Jennie O. b. PA.

NOTE 3: ***Lewis received pension later in life due to the wound to his arm and other illness.
