Enlisted September 26, 1862, at Striders Mill, VA as Private, Company F, 1st Regiment, Virginia Cavalry, Confederate States Army.

Private Small was captured by Union forces at Edinsburg, VA, October 1, 1864 and sent to Point Lookout, MD federal prison camp as a POW. Private Small was released from Point Lookout on June 20, 1865.

Maberry(also Mayberry)Gohene(also Goheen)Small was the son of William Riland Small and Margaret Williamson. In 1880, he married Mary B. Myers of Jefferson County, West Virginia.
