Leo W. Zimmer
Port Huron - Leo W. Zimmer, 85, of Port Huron, passed away peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, May 8, 2002, in Port Huron Hospital.
He was born to Walter and Mary Zimmer on Sept. 3, 1916, in Columbus Township and married Virginia Alice Woodard on Dec. 28, 1940. She passed away May 10, 1993. On July 27, 1995, he married Norma F. Hoover.
Leo served honorably with the U. S. Army during World War II in the European and Asiatic theaters. He was a lumberman with the combat engineers seeing action in Normandy, Remagen, Battle of the Bulge, and the Phillippines, ending his military career training for the invasion of Japan. HE warned numerous European, African, Asiatic and Middle Eastern Theater Ribbons and medals Upon returning, he founded Murray-Zimmer Heating & Cooling, Inc. In 1946, continuing to operate the business until his retirement in 1993.
Leo was very dedicated to the youth of the community, He was a long-time coach, sponsor, board member, charter vice president and founding member of the Port Huron Minor Hockey Association. He was active the the Blue Water Council Boy Scouts where he was a former board member, past council president and Silver Beaver Award recipient. For 10 years, he served as president and seven years as treasurer of Port Huron Little League. For many years he served as chairman of the finance committee at St. Stephen Catholic Church He was a member of the DAV, Charles Hammond Post 8 American Legion, Port Huron Contractors Association and the City of Port Huron Mechanical License Board.
He is survived by his wife, Norma Zimmer; four sons, Robert J. (Virginia) Zimmer, William G. (Susan) Zimmer, John M. (Janice) Zimmer and David T. (Susan) Zimmer; two daughters, Patricia L. (Thomas) Bently and Marilyn A. Zimmer; two stepchildren, Seth (Ellen) Hoover and Sandra (John) Sparks; his grandchildren, Kristine Turgeon, Thomas M. Bentley, Kathleen M. Zimmer, Chad Shaw, Tracey McKay, Stacey Rabideau, Amber L. Zimmer, Corinne, Michael and Sarah Zimmer and Robert N. and Allison E. Zimmer; great-grandchildren, Haley E., JesseL. Hunter, Abbey Jamison and Charlie; and several nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by several brothers and sisters.
The funeral mass will be celebrated at 10 A.M. Saturday, May 11, 2002, in St. Joseph Catholic Church. The Rev. Fr. Rene DEsMarais,k pastor of ST. Joseph Catholic Church, will officiate. Burial will follow in Mount Hope Cemetery.
Visitation will be 7 to 9 P.M. today and 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 P.M. Fir day in Smith Family Funeral Home_North, 1525 Hancock St., and beginning at 9 A.M. Saturday at the church. Contributions may be made in Leo's memory to the Blue Water Council Boy Scouts or St. Joseph Catholic Church.
