Eugene possessed an abundance of kindness and had a keen sense of responsibility to his family. Following the death of his father, Eugene remained in the family home to help his younger sister Mamie take care of their mother (who was in ill health).

Approximately five years after that, Eugene took in and raised his young niece Marjorie (his brother George's daughter). The reason for Marjorie joining Eugene's household has been lost to the passage of time. However, Eugene had always been very good with children, and he and Marjorie developed a strong bond. Their loyalty to each other was so great, Marjorie vowed they would never be separated. True to her word, Eugene remained with her even after she got married. The arrangement worked very well, for Marjorie's husband became close friends with Eugene; it is very likely he considered Gene not only his friend, but a father-figure as well.

However, worsening health due to chronic bronchitis forced Eugene to make a major life change around 1948 when he moved in with his widowed sister Mamie. Undoubtedly, Marjorie missed his presence in her home, but he remained present in her life, having moved only a block or so away from the place that had been his home for over 35 years.

In early January 1951, Eugene, who had inherited the Parkinson family's predisposition to pulmonary ailments, succumbed to pneumonia at the age of 69.

Eugene was a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, Aerie No. 9, Sacramento, CA.
