NOTE: The gravestone shows date of death to be October 20, 1881. In actuality, Mr. Stebbins death notice was published by the Bodie Daily Free Press on Tuesday, Nov. 22, 1881, stating he had "died Monday." Monday was November 21, 1881. /ss

For several years he was a Bodie Town Constable.

His marker doesn't give a birth date, but mentions he was 56 years old at the time of his death. This would put his birth in 1824 or 1825.

Death of S. G. Stebbins. (abstract) gives full name as Solomon Goodsel Stebbins; Constable for Bodie; died at the Cosmopolitan Hotel; born in New York, aged 56 years; previously lived in Austin, White Pine and Pioche, Nevada and Darwin, Inyo County, CA; a sister lives in Waukegan, Ill. and a brother lives in Kenoska, Wisc.

(Note: The location where Stebbins was enumerated in 1860 was at what was known as Slippery Ford on the road between Placerville and the Carson Valley. The hotel of Powell Crosley may have been a secondary hotel to J. F. Berry’s Strawberry Station, which Crosley purchased from Berry in 1863. Stebbins likely butchered the meats served at the hotel to the throngs of people beginning to rush to the Comstock after the discoveries in 1859.)
