The Kearns lived in the old William and Mary King Kearns house on Second Creek three miles south of Farmer, NC. The old house dated back to the time of the American Revolution. In 1908, Orph and his brother-in law Kearny Plummer( with financial support from Marvin Kearns), built a roller mill near where Dunbar Bridge crossed the Uwharrie River. At the time, roller mills were considered technologically superior to the old millstone-type mill.
