Charles was the only child born to John George William and his first wife Katharina (Mohr) Heymann. His mother died eighteen months after his birth, and his father returned to his parents' home. Charles would stay with his paternal grandparents until age seven and then rejoin his father and new family.

He attended the local school and was confirmed at Hunt's Corners Reformed Church. As a young man, he helped his father on the farm.

On February 22, 1877 he married Elizabeth Scheid. They had six children.

Charles continued to engage in farming in the area of Hunt's Corners, and he held various township offices. In 1917, Charles and Elizabeth held a public sale and moved to Monroeville, Ohio. In 1927 they observed their golden wedding anniversary.
