** Date of newspaper is not always the date of the incident - this was a weekly, and stories were written, set, and the printing was done after the facts were typeset, often days later.

Chico Weekly Chronicle-Record, Saturday, August 4, 1888, pg 4 col 1: Henry Beckham Dead. Mr. Jacob Longfellow received a telegram last evening from Mrs. Henry Beckham, stating that her husband had died at Hupp’s Springs, four miles from Bartlett Springs, in Lake county, and that his remains would arrive in Chico on the express train this morning.

Mr. Beckham had been in bad health a long time, and had made a determined struggle for life. For several years past he has been compelled to go from place to place in quest of restorative agencies. At first the fell-destroyer overtook him away from home, but this beloved wife was by his side. Mr. Beckham had been many years a citizen of Chico, in partnership with Mr. Longfellow, conducting a corral and feed yard, which was very popular with teamsters. A man of quiet and unpretending manners, of strict business principles, and a high sense of honor, he was very highly esteemed by all who knew him. The arrangements for the funeral have not yet been made.
