Elkanah M. Morrell, Cain, was born 7 Jan. 1862 in the 1st Civil District, Sunrise Community of Sullivan Co. he was married to Susan 'Sis' Elizabeth Morrell. His father, William R. Morrell 1826-1907 was a Civil War Veteran, having received a disabling leg wound. His grandfather, Caleb Morrell, born in 1787, died in 1860. His great grandfather was Jonathan 1, 1753-1800 who migrated here from the Shenandoah Valley.
He received a land grant from the state of North Carolina of 65 acres. It was believed Cain was a farmer, but after researching records, we learned that he was the Sullivan Co. Road Commissioner for 2 terms 1897-1899 and 1899-1901. He may also served in other positions since one document signed by him in 1931 shows him as County Paymaster for a road project. Records show some of the roads that were mapped out and completed under his supervision. Records show that he was a 'Jury of View', who settled damage claims and property disputes by on-sight observation with witnesses. Records also show that he secured rights-of-ways, construction materials, equipment and labor crews. He was well-respected, big in politics and a staunch Democrat. It is said that the telephone for fire alert from high Knob Tower at Holston Mountain was located in his home.
