William Henry Dresser was married to Harriet Sarah Jenkins on 24 July 1838 in Union Grove, Dekalb, Ill. They had five children: Albert R. Dresser, Charles H. Dresser, Emma Matilda Dresser, William Orlando Dresser and Juliah Mariah Dresser. Sarah Jenkins died in 1854 due to consumption. William had returned from California where he had been for the Gold Rush in 1853. In the Selected U.S. Federal Census Non-Population Schedules of 1850=1880 William is listed with Harriet S. Dresser. Since Sarah had died the two cannot be the same person. I have in my possession copies of letters of William Dresser to Sarah Jenkins Dresser that are held in the Bancroft Museum, Berkeley,CA from Becky Dresser

Note: A note I recieved from a Find A Grave contributor says that Williams wife Sara had the last name of Jenks, not Jenkins. Quoted from the Ancestry.com and the California library of pioneer records. Also that they could not find any documentation of Sarah having a first name of Harriet. They think that Harriet may have been William's second wife.

Excerpt from Centennial Family Memories of Paso Robles, California
The Reverend William Dresser first settled in Wisconsin in 1840. Working a a wagon train contractor, he frequented California often, until finally in 1850 he settled in Yuba City with his family. Letters about his trips to California were published in book form and can be found at the Bancroft Library in Berkeley, California. From Joyce Lombardi.
