Funeral services for Betty Blue Whiteman, 89, Richey, are at 2 p.m., Monday, Oct. 20, 2003, at the Richey United Methodist Church in Richey, with Pastor Susan Twidwell officiating.

Musical selections are provided by Karen Casterline. Casketbearers are Pat Mischel, Wayne Dey, Chad Louser, Jeremy Morast, Boyd Louser and Bill Smith. Honorary casketbearers are Lyndon Pomeroy, George Winhofer, Dale Rosaaen and Larry Lobdell. Ushers are Cory Louser and Shawn Mischel. Interment will be in the Richey Cemetery.

Betty was born on June 2, 1914, in Richey, the daughter of William and Blanche (Hott) Blue, who came from Indiana to homestead near Richey in 1910. She grew up and attended schools in Richey and graduated as valedictorian of the class of 1932. That fall Betty attended Montana Normal School in Dillion, graduating from there in 1937.

She was united in marriage to George Dewey Whiteman on Feb. 23, 1935, in Sidney. To this marriage four children were born, Dewey Dean, Peggy, Sharon and Janice. After the marriage they rented a farm north of Richey and they later purchased that farm.

Betty taught for nine years in rural schools in Dawson and Richland. Some of those schools were Manrock, Waters, Grandview, Hill Crest, Rosaaen and Goss. During the summer months of the year, Betty attended summer school until she earned her degree in 1976. She taught 26 years in the Richey Public Schools and retired from teaching in 1978. Her husband died in March of 1978 and Betty continued to live in Richey.

Betty was a member of the Richey United Methodist Church. She really enjoyed family history, history of her church and school. She wrote five books: "Honyocker's Heritage - A history of Richey and Community;" "A History of United Methodist Church for Celebrating its 75 years: 1914-1989;" "Richey Schools Memories - A History of Richey Schools, 1916-1991;" "History of Methodist Women of Richey - 1923-1994;" and "Richey, Little Town on the Prairie" in 1998. She also received several awards including Richey Outstanding Citizen of 1974-1975, Personalities of America, The World Who's Who of Women 1981 and 1983, The international Who's Who of Intellectuals of 1983 and the Peter Yeagen Award of 1993.

Betty died on Wednesday, Oct. 15, 2003, at the Glendive Medical Center.

Surviving her are a son, Dewey Dean Whiteman, Richey; two daughters, Sharon Raab, Billings, and Janice (Boyd) Louser, Glendive; and 18 grandchildren, 40 great-grandchildren, and one-great-great-grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, George Dewey; daughter, Peggy; three brothers, Darrell, Victor and Russell; four sisters, Pauline, Ersel, Alice and Maxine; and two great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandchild.
