Accidentally Shot

Mrs. Mary James Estep has received from California the newspaper clipping below, which tells of the accidental shooting that caused her husband's death.

Mr. Estep went to California a few months ago and was a night operator at Belden. He was night operator at the depot in Stella about three years ago. The shooting occurred in a room at the hotel Tuesday evening before Christmas. Jessel's wife and the landlady were in a room near, and after he and Mr. Estep were wounded, they walked to where they were. Mr. Estep died at the hospital in Oroville the next morning. He was wounded in the Abdomen.

Stella, Neb.

Mrs Estep and her small daughter Gladys reside here at the home of her father, Elmer E. James. She received the message Christmas eve, and the Saturday following went to the home of her parents-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. John Estep, at Lansing, Kansas, and remained there a week. The body arrived Wednesday, December 31 at Leavenworth, where the funeral was held in a chapel, and burial was in the Lansing cemetery.

Mr. Estep would be 22 years old February 5.
Oroville, Dec. 12--In a dying statement made yesterday morning at the Oroville hospital, Albert Jessel, victim of a bullet fired by Carl Johnson in Belden Tuesday night. Johnson was entirely vindicated from all blame for the accident. Virgil Estep, the other victim of the shooting, also stated before dying that Johnson did not shoot intentionally, declared Assistant District Attorney George E. Gardner.

Johnson immediately filled with remorse and terror at what he had done, tore his hair, and retreating to the railroad tracks, took refuge beneath a freight car, where he had to be taken by force by the authorities.

Oroville, Dec. 29--At an inquest held Saturday Carl Johnson, who is held in the Plumas county jail, testified that the shot fired from his pistol, which resulted in the death of both Albert Jessel and Virgil Estep, was purely accidental.

According to the story told by Johnson who was brought to Oroville Friday night, he was facing Estep and Jessel, showing them his pistol which they were contemplating purchasing. Suddenly the pistol was discharged. Johnson states that the trigger must have been pulled, but as to how it happened he was unable to explain.

Johnson was taken back to Quincy where he will be held until further investigation can be made. Stella, Press Jan. 2, 1920, death 12-24, 1919; birth 2-5-1897; enlisted 9-6-1018; discharged Jan. 17, 1919.
