Her maiden name was Maria Betts Kinnier, Betts from her mother's side Sarah Betts Kinnier and Kinnier from her father Robert Kinnier. Her married name was Maria Kinnier Pomeroy. She married Paris Rhodes Pomeroy in late 1837, and they had 4 children together from 1839 to 1847. She died on Christmas Day 1855, at the age of 35. Her sister Adelia Kinnier Hamilton purchased a large plot in Green-Wood Cemetery Brooklyn, Lot 9343, where Maria was the first burial. Adelia Kinnier Hamilton and her husband Mortimer took Maria's three living children Ralph, Hamilton and Adelia Pomeroy into her home in Brooklyn to raise them. Maria's husband Paris continued to live in New York City. His support of their children and his story after 1852 is not currently known, other than his death in Brooklyn in 1871 and burial with his family in Green-Wood.

Although there were no photos of her during her lifetime, a photo of a lovely painting of Maria done in 1838, in her wedding dress, is provided in this memorial. In Green-Wood Cemetery she is acknowledged with others on the 1868 marble statue monument (recorded on-line but now illegible), on the 2018 Pomeroy Monument, and on her grave tombstone.
