David R. Pingree, Jr. passed away peacefully March 28, 2006 at the age of 88. He was born March 2, 1918 in Salt Lake City, Utah to David R. and Vervene H. Pingree. David graduated from East High School in 1935. He attended the University of Utah from 1935-37 and was affiliated with the Sigma Nu fraternity. He transferred to Stanford University in 1937 and received a bachelor's degree in economics in 1939. David received an M.B.A. from Harvard University in 1941. While attending Harvard University, David met his future wife, Sabey Driggs, in New York City. They were married November 14, 1942 in Miami, FL. Their marriage was later solemnized in the Salt Lake LDS temple. David and Sabey were happily married for 61 years. The Lord called Sabey home in January 2004 and she is now eternally reunited with her beloved "Davidee" in heaven. David enlisted in the U.S. Navy and was stationed in the Caribbean and Hawaiian Islands. He attained the rank of Lieutenant Commander and served in the naval reserves for 16 years following his active duty. David was a professor of finance at the University of Utah for 50 years. His teaching inspired thousands of students, with an emphasis on thrift and the power of savings. David was immensely popular with his students, with a dry wit and practical "down-to-earth" approach. David was a recipient of the University of Utah Distinguished Teaching Award. In addition to his teaching, David and his father owned and operated Morlite Lamp and Shade Company. David was named vice president of the First Security Bank Investment Division in December 1971. He retired after 20 years as senior vice president and manager of trust investments. David remained active in the financial community, serving as an account executive at Dean Witter Reynolds. David assisted numerous organizations, including the Hinckley Institute of Politics, the Salt Lake Community College Board, the Utah State Employee Retirement Fund, and the Boy Scouts of America. David was active in the Federal Heights and Arlington Hills LDS wards. He served in many capacities and enjoyed home teaching visits. David was also affiliated with the Sons of the American Revolution, the Sons of Utah Pioneers, and the Ensign Club. David's life imparts a legacy of love, self-sacrifice, honesty, and humor to all who were touched by him. He is survived by his children David (Jan) R. Pingree III, Trabuco Canyon, CA; Durian (Jill) D. Pingree, Incline Village, NV; Sabey Jane (Russell) Pingree Grange, Anchorage, AK; Benjamin (Susann) D. Pingree, Matthews, NC; eight grandchildren and two great-grand-children. Also survived by his brother, William H. Pingree, Scottsdale, AZ; and his sister, Margaret P. Reynolds, Kingsport, TN. Funeral services honoring David will be held Saturday, April 8 at Larkin Mortuary, 260 East South Temple at 10 a.m. with a visitation for family and friends one hour prior to the service. Interment, Pleasant Grove City Cemetery. Our family would like to thank many wonderful caregivers who helped David remain at his beloved home including Megan, Erin, Ellie, and Monica. We also thank caregivers at the Wellington and Sunrise assisted living homes in Salt Lake and Mission Viejo, CA, respectively. In lieu of flowers, our family suggests contributions to The University of Utah College of Business, Salt Lake Community College, The LDS Church Perpetual Education Fund or The Humane Society of Utah (David loved dogs).
