Lavina was born in Baltimore, Maryland to Dennis and Eliza Lackland. In 1835, the family immigrated to St. Louis, Missouri. She married Stephen Hempstead on 15 June 1837 and moved to Dubuque that year.

During a trip to St. Louis during the mid-1860's, Lavina was in an accident that left her in a "paralytic condition", which eventually led to her death.

She was survived by her husband (former Governor Stephen Hempstead), three children (Leva Richmond, Junius Hempstead and Eugene Hempstead).

An obituary was printed in the 4 January 1871 edition of the Dubuque Daily Herald (Dubuque, Iowa).
