Harry was born in the small village of Aurora Maine. He attended the small one room school there that is currently being restored. He left Aurora when he was 9 and family legend says it he walked to his grandmother Richrardson's farm in Amherst, Maine. He remained with her or as a farm worker for neighbors until his marriage to Bernice Dorr. She was 16 and he was 17. Their first daughter was born in 1915, Leonore, quickly followed by Lillian and Beatrice. Ruth Ellen was born a number of years later. Harry started his own plumbing business during the depression. His wife did the office work. It was Dorr Plumbing Company on Exchange Street in Bangor, Maine. It backed on to the Kenduskeag just before it joined the Penobscot.
Harry was a very proud father and grandfather. He was very patient at sharing his carpentry, hunting and fishing skills with his children and grandchildren.
He had bought a piece of property on Green Lake and for a couple of years he and his daughters' families built the camp. It was here that he suffered his first heart attack in about 1949. He retired from his business and after his daughter, Leonore moved back to California, he spent several winters there. Quite a change for someone who had never left Maine.
