Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Clark County, Indiana, he served as a Sergeant in the 4th Illinois Volunteers in the Mexican War. With the start of the Civil War, he was appointed Colonel of the 21st Indiana Volunteer Infantry and took part in the occupation of New Orleans, Louisiana. Promoted Brigadier General, US Volunteers in November 1862, he commanded the 1st Division of he XIX Corps in actions at Mansfield, Pleasant Hill, Shenandoah Valley and commanded the Department of West Virginia from July 1864, until the end of the war. For distinguished service, he was brevetted Major General of US Volunteers on March 13, 1865. Following the war, he was appointed a member of the board of review in the pension office in Washington.
