E3-Aviation Machinist Airman. KIA-Plane crash, Gulf of Tonkin. USS Yorktown, VS-23, TF 77, 7th Fleet, U.S. Navy. Lost on a sortie searching for the movement of people and supplies along the coast of North Vietnam. Vietnam Veterans Memorial Wall: Panel 45E, Line 7.
Other members of the crew lost (missing) on that date: CDR Donald R. Hubbs (1926-1968), Palmyra, NJ; LTJG Lee D. Benson (1943-1968) San Mateo, CA; and, AX2 Randall J. Nightingale (1943-1968) Ornaga, IL.
The following was provided by contributor Finding Family (47632171) from the Vietnam War Records at the National Archives: Aviation Machinists Mate (recipocating), Third Class Thomas was living in Aurora, Colorado when he entered the service, becoming a member of Air Antisubmarine Squadron 23, AntiSubmarine Air Carrier Group 55, aboard the Aircraft Carrier USS YORKTOWN (CVS-10).
On March 17, 1968, he was a crew member of a Martin Tracker AntiSubmarine Aircraft (S-26) on a night surveillance mission over the North Vietnam coast in bad weather. Contact with the aircraft was lost. His remains were never recovered.
AMN Thomas David Barber's name is inscribed on the Courts of the Missing at the Honolulu Memorial.
