Nathaniel Carter was the son of James Shadrick Carter and Mary Elizabeth Pope Carter. Born in Butts County, GA. Came to Texas at the age of about 17. Farmer, merchant and Baptist. Was married to Ruby Eugene Jolly on 12-24-1905 in Cass County, TX. She was born 10-31-1887 in Cass County, TX, a Baptist, and she died on 11-28-1962. To this union 8 children were born:

NATHAN C. CARTER FUNERAL SET FOR FRIDAY AT 2:30
Nathan C. Carter, 66, resident of Marion County for the past 44 years, died Thursday, December 15 after a brief illness.
Funeral services will be held at the First Baptist Church at 2:30 Friday afternoon, December 16, with the Rev. Edwin Johnson, local pastor, the Rev. Edgar Parker of Carthage and the Rev. Lester Morris of Mt. Pleasant officiating. Burial will be in the Mt. Zion cemetery.
Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Ruby E. Carter; three sons, Sidney F. Carter, J. S. Carter and James H. Carter all of Jefferson; two daughters, Miss Lois A. Carter of Jefferson and Mrs. Ruby P. Callison of Lodi; two brother, Tom Carter and Osborne Carter of Jefferson; three sisters, Mrs. Dollie McCann and Mrs. J. C. Morrison of Jefferson and Mrs. A. K Stuart of Lodi, and two grandchildren.
Active pallbearers will be Manse Fant, Charlie Schellinger, Thompson Grubbs, Bill McGuffin, Curtis McGuffin, John Sellers, M. H. Bender and Bill Shaw.
Honorary pallbearers will be the following business men of Jefferson: Dr. W. S. Terry, Dr. J. M. DeWare, Elmer Jones, J. H. Benefield Jr., L. B. Landers, O. C. Billingsley Sr., J. R. Cornelius Sr., W. R. Davis, J. T. King and J. D. Wood.
