Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in New York City, New York, he was a successful farmer at the start of the Civil War, when he enlisted in the Union Army. Commissioned Captain of the Commissary of Subsistence for Volunteers, he raised an African-American regiment and was promoted Colonel. Promoted Brigadier General in December 1862, he served in the Department of the South maintaining operations as a liaison for General William T. Sherman. For his contributions to the war effort, he was brevetted Major General of US volunteers.
