Civil War Union Brigadier General. Born in Concord, New Hampshire, he graduated from West Point in 1843 and served in the Mexican War. When the Civil War erupted, he was a Captain at the Army detachment in St. Augustine Springs, Texas when captured by the Confederates in July 1861. Prisoner exchanged in August 1862, he returned to active duty and was assigned Colonel in command of the 12th New Hampshire Infantry. He took part in the Maryland Campaign and at the Battle of Chancellorsville 1863, he was wounded and captured again. Prisoner exchanged in October 1863, he was the assistant provost marshal general of Ohio until September 1864, when he assumed command of a brigade in the XXIV Corps serving until promoted Brigadier General in May 1865. After the war, he remained in the Regular Army and had command of the Department of Missouri until his retirement on October 12, 1886.
