Civil War Union Brigadier General. An officer in the Regular Army at the start of the Civil War, he recruited volunteers for an Ohio regiment and was appointed Colonel in command of the 76th Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The Regiment entered the field in February 1862, seeing action at the Battle of Fort Donelson and the Battle of Shiloh. In 1863, he led the 76th Ohio in the first assault upon Vicksburg, Mission Ridge and Ringgold. Promoted Brigadier General in 1864, he led his corps through Atlanta, Georgia and to the sea in the Campaign of the Carolinas. By the end of the war, he had led the 76th Ohio in 47 battles and moved 9,625 miles.
