Civil War Union Brigadier General. Prior to the Civil War, he journeyed overland to the California gold fields and experiences there, 1849 to 1850. Returning to Chicago in 1851, he began work in manufacturing, contracting and railroad building. During the Civil War, he was Colonel of the 88th Illinois Infantry and participated in the arrest of the Confederate spy Belle Boyd. He served in the Battle of Stones River, Missionary Ridge, where he led a successful charge and was captured in 1864. He was prisoner exchanged, and mustered out of the Army in 1866, with the rank of Brigadier General. After the war, he ran a sugar plantation in Louisiana for one year, returned to Chicago, where he was postmaster, 1867 to 1868 and was manufacturer head of Sherman, Haley & Company.
