MAYOR FERGUSON DIES; SERVICES TUESDAY

Death Comes 4 Days After Heart Attack

Two-Term City Executive Long Active In Politics

Mayor William Lashley Ferguson, 70, twice elected mayor of Lima and holder of municipal offices at frequent intervals since 1933, died in Memorial Hospital at 1:25 p.m. yesterday.

Death was attributed to coronary thrombosis. The mayor collapsed in his City Building office last Tuesday morning and was taken to the hospital immediately. He suffered a second heart attack the following day, and his condition steadily worsened, hospital attaches said.

Death of Mayor Ferguson automatically, by City Charter, moves Council President Clyde Welty into office as mayor for the unexpired term, until November of 1957.

Mayor Ferguson long had been a figure in Lima politics and public service.

He first gained public office in 1933 following a successful campaign for councilman from the Third Ward. He was reelected in 1935, then stepped out of the public eye briefly when he lost a race in 1937 for the post of councilman-at-large.

But in 1939 he won, and served as councilman-at-large until April, 1944, when he became mayor of Lima upon the death of Mayor A. L. Metheany.

In the fall of 1945 he faced William V. Daley in the race for a full term as mayor and won the election by a margin of 2,639 votes.

Campaigning principally on his record of the previous four years, during which, he declared, more improvement had been accomplished in city government than in any previous decade. Ferguson was defeated in 1949 by Stanley Welker.

Then, in 1953, this time running against a newcomer to politics, Carl Horn, Ferguson was once again elected mayor. (Welker was defeated in the primary.)

Mayor Ferguson was born Oct. 17, 1884, in Auglaize County, and with his family moved to Waynesfield when he was six years old. He attended high school there.

When 19 he moved to Lima and went to work for the old Lima Creamery and Cold Storage Co., no longer in existence. He then worked for the old C. H. & D. railway as timekeeper and in the shop for about three years before taking an office job with the old Lima Locomotive & Machine Co. (later Lima-Hamilton and now Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corp.) He worked for that firm for 40 years, until he became mayor.

Mayor Ferguson was a member of Trinity Methodist Church and active in Masonic work. He was a member of Lima Lodge No. 205, Free and Accepted Masons; Lima Chapter No. 49, Royal Arch Masons; Lima Council No. 20, Royal and Select Masters; Shawnee Commandery No. 14, Knights Templar, Lima Shrine Club, El Karan Grotto, the Masonic Immediate Relief Assn., and of the Lima Elks Lodge.

He also was a member of the Trinity Chapter No. 16, Order of the Eastern Star; Knights of Pythias, Eagles Lodge, Veterans Club of the Baldwin-Lima-Hamilton Corp., Local 106, UAW-CIO, which represents B-L-H employes, and the Fraternal Order of Police Associates.

Besides his widow, Estella J., he is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Eugene Palmer, Vandalia; a son, William J., at home; a granddaughter, Constance Ann Palmer; three brothers, Fred, 416 Marian Ave.; Berlin S., Marion; Robert, Hamilton; three sisters, Mrs. Lawrence Long, 428 1/2 Prospect Ave., and Misses Errable and Helen Ferguson, 617 Linden St.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Davis-Miller & Son Funeral Home, the Rev. Dr. J. Ira Jones, pastor of Trinity Methodist Church officiating, assisted by the Rev. Sylvan Lehman, pastor of the First Mennonite Church. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Active pallbearers will be William Barringer, Frank Smith, Don Jenkins, Jess Ford, David O. Steiner and Richard E. Cheney. Honorary pallbearers will be members of City Council, city officials, heads of city departments, and Lee G. VanBlargan, former city solicitor.

Knights of Pythias services will be at 7 p.m. and Elks Lodge services at 8 p.m. today; and Order of Eastern Star services 7:30 p.m., and Knights Templar services, 8 p.m. tomorrow. All will be at the funeral home.
