Jacob enlisted August 16, 1862 with Company H, 105th Illinois Volunteer Infantry at Sandwich, Illinois. He was mustered in on September 2, 1862 at Dixon, Illinois by Captain Barri. Enlisted as a Private, Jacob was promoted to Corporal before being mustered out June 7, 1865 at Washington D.C. When enlisted he was listed as 5'9", light complexion, with gray eyes and dark hair. He was single and listed his occupation as farmer.
