Gordon graduated from Willcox High School in 1942. He attended the University of Arizona and University of California at Los Angeles before entering the United States Navy in 1943. He served about two years and eight months and during this time he was elevated to the rank of ensign. He graduated from the University of California at Berkely in 1947 in business administration. He attended Harvard Graduate School of Business during his service. Gordon worked briefly in business before returning to the University of Southern California to study drama and voice and was active as a singer and actor. He was in the original cast of "My Fair Lady" and in the national company of "South Pacific."
On May 15, 1955 in Hollywood, California, Gordon married Nancy Julia Bramlage. Gordon and Nancy had children: Mark Christopher and Brian Jeffrey.
