Martha was the daughter of Samuel Mills Lasell and Josephine Potter Lasell. She married Birchard Portis at the Adams Hotel in Denver.

"Mrs. Martha Lasell Portis died at her home near Jefferson Thursday morning at 7:30 o'clock, after a brief illness. Mr. and Mrs. Portis returned Sunday from a ten-week honeymoon in the east and the latter was seemingly in good health. She spent Monday and Tuesday at her father's ranch, complaining of a slight cold on the latter day, when the young couple moved to Mr. Portis' property below Jefferson. On Wednesday the cough was much worse and Dr. Lathrop of Como was sent for, diagnosing the case as double pneumonia and holding out no hopes of recovery..."

Martha was buried in Como Cemetery next to her mother.
