VIRGIL M. KINZIE

Virgil M. Kinzie, 93, passed away on August 13, 1999, at the Heritage Living Center, Haxtun, from congestive heart failure.

Virgil was born December 2, 1905, in Chushing, OK, to John Edward and Emma [Ronk] Kinzie. He was the sixth of seven children. He got his early education in rural one-room schools in Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado and New Mexico. In 1913 his father moved his family to Bellville, KS for two years.

In 1915 the family moved to a farm near Haxtun. Three years later the family moved to a farm south of Dailey. In 1920 the family moved to a farm near Clovis, NM. While there Virgil played basketball and participated in track. In 1924, due to his father's broken health, the family moved back to Dailey where Virgil graduated from high school. After graduation he attended the Church of the Brethren College in McPerson, KS, for a short time.

Mr. Kinzie worked for two years in the oil fields, then returned to Dailey where he married Catherine Dinsmore on November 10, 1929. After two years of working at a filling station in Dailey, his employer, Forsythe Co., transferred him to Goodland, KS as manager of a wholesale grocery operation. In 1933, Virgil was transferred back to Fleming as a filling station operator.

In mid-1935 he went into partnership with Catherine's father and became the manager of the Dinsmores' farm. After several years, Virgil purchased his own farm. He continued the partnership with Dinsmore and managed both farms.

Virgil is survived by his wife, Catherine E. Kinzie, Haxtun; sons Edward Kinzie and wife Judith Ann, Salida, and Douglas Kinzie, Haxtun; daughters, Virginia Lee [Kinzie] Allen and husband Neal, Englewood, and Marianne [Kinzie] Skold and husband Glen, Liberty, MO; 16 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services were conducted on August 17, 1999, at the Church of the Brethren, Haxtun, with Rev. Roy Pfaltzgraff officiating. Burial followed at Haxtun Cemetery.
