Killed while repulsing Pickett's Charge during the final day of the Battle of Gettysburg. Killed while trying to reload the "Gettysburg Gun" of Battery B, 1st Rhode Island Light Artillery (Brown's Battery) along with Cpl. Henry H. Ballou and Pvt. William Jones. The barrel was dented by an enemy shell and the shell being loaded was lodged in the barrel.
The Gettysburg Gun is located in the State Capitol in Providence.
