Plymouth Man Candidate for A.L. Dept.

Griggs-Wyatt Post No 33, the American Legion of Meredith proudly endorses one of its members, Eston W. Bird for the office of Department Commander. Election of Department officers will take place at the convention to be held in Dover on June 17, 18, 19. Mr. Bird is the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Bird of Plymouth and attended Plymouth schools.

Currently serving as one of four Department Vice Commanders, Bird has been active in all phases of American Legion work since joining the organization in 1946. During World War II he served in the Navy, seeing action in the South Pacific including Iwo Jima and other island attacks, and in Japan.

He served the Meredith post in many offices including two terms as Commander in 1950 and 1951. He rose through various District offices to the position of District 7 Commander in 1954 and was elected to his present Department Post last June.

His special attention is directed this year to Post Activities and Community Service, being chairman of both committees. He is currently assigned as a member of the National Rehabilitation Committee and holds other committee assignments at Post and District levels.

Mr. Bird is a member of Voiture 618, The Forty et Eight, and has held several offices in this organization. He founded and commands the recently organized initiation team of the Forty et Eight. His other interests include the Boy Scouts, which he has served for many years, civilian defense, and ground observers corps he organized in Meredith two years ago. He is employed as manager of the Meredith Diner.

His wife Jean is currently Legislative Chairman for the American Legion Auxiliary Department of N.H., and has previously served as Unit and District President. The couple have a daughter Emily who is also a member of Griggs-Wyatt Unit, A.L. Auxiliary, and a son, Eston, Jr. >The Plymouth Record, March 31, 1955.
Final Rites August 1 for Eston W. Bird, Sr.

Eston W. Bird, Sr. 55, of Meredith died Monday, July 29, at the Veterans Administration Hospital, Manchester after a long illness. He was born in Woodsville, March 2, 1919, son of James and Lena (Miller) Bird. He attended schools in Plymouth, moving to Meredith many years ago. He married Miss Jean Bernard of Meredith in 1939 and they have since made their home there. He was a cook at the Maple Diner in Plymouth and at Meredith Diner many years. He later was employed as a route supervisor and salesman for the Lakes Region Laundry in Laconia.

He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II, Commander of the Griggs-Wyatt Post American Legion from 1951-52 and 1973; Past District Commander of District seven, American Legion; a Past Vice Commander of the State Department of the American Legion; a former Chef de Guerre of the Belknap Voiture 40 et 8; a former member of the Meredith Fire Department and a Director of the Oakland Cemetery Association He was an avid golfer.

The family includes his wife, Mrs. Jean (Bernard) Bird; a son, Eston W. Bird, Jr. of Montrose, Pa.; a daughter, Mrs. Emily K. Goodrich of Endwell, N.Y.; his mother, Mrs. Lena M. Bird of Plymouth; a brother, James H. Bird of Salem; two sisters, Louise Bird of Plymouth and Mrs. Janice Hirtle of Eastford, Conn.; six grandchildren, aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church. The Rev. Patrick Finleon, pastor, will officiate.

Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery. Friends may call at the Kemp-Symonds Funeral Home Wednesday from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. >The Plymouth Record, July 30, 1973.
