The son of John & Catherine (Lawson) Bressler, he married Lydia Ann Keller May 24, 1860, and fathered Alice Johanna (b. 05/03/61 - married William Price), Irvin (b. 1863, d. 08/12/64), James (b. 1865, d. 05/26/66), Ida (b. 08/??/67), Minerva C. (b. 11/27/68, d. 09/02/83), Sarah (b. 1870), Mary C. (b. 10/??/71), Paul (b. 1873), Walter (b. 07/20/76), and Emma (b. 08/30/78). In 1860, he was a laborer living in Codorus Township, York County, Pennsylvania.

A Civil War veteran of brief duration, he was drafted in York County October 24, 1862, and mustered into federal service at York November 7 as a private with Co. B, 166th Pennsylvania Infantry (aka "Drafted Militia"). Despite being promoted to corporal in early December, he almost immediately deserted - to date December 5, 1862 - and did not return.

Cause of death is listed as "heart failure" with "pneumonia" a contributing factor.
