He was born on September 22, 1895 in Saint Johns, Mercer County, Ohio, the son of William and Eleanor Bier Campbell. On October 11, 1922, he was married to Bessie Emerson, who died on January 29, 1922. In 1902 and 1903 he lived at 538 West Elm Street, in Lima, Ward 5, Allen County, Ohio. In 1902 according to the city directory he was listed as a laborer and the next year a cook.

Private George Campbell, serial number 1842598, joined the Army Reserve at Fort Thomas, Kentucky on May 30, 1917. He was 21 and 8/12 years old at his time of enlistment. He enlisted into the Army Medical Department, Field Hospital 23, at Fort Oglethorpe, Georgia to July 1, 1917. He was assigned to Field Hospital 318 until his discharge. He was a Private 1st Class on Oct 7, 1917. He was involved in the engagement at St. and the Meuse-Argonne, the Defensive Sector, AEF, May 26, 1918 to May 31, 1919. He was honorably discharge on June 13, 1919.

The 1920 US Federal Census showed him living in Lima Ward 5, Allen County, Ohio on Florance Avenue. His occupation was a laborer for the locomotive industry. According to his obituary he retired as a farmer. He died in Lima on December 30, 1965 and is buried at the Mount Tabor Cemetery, Gutman, Auglaize County, Ohio.
