Corporal, 7th Vermont Inf., Co. C.

from the Rutland Daily Herald, Oct. 20, 1896:
Carlos W. Nichols died at his home on Prospect street yesterday at the age of 71. Mr. Nichols was confined to his bed at the time of the state elections but at his earnest request he was carried to the polling place, where he cast his last ballot and was taken back to his bed.
Mr. Nichols was a native of Rutland. He was engaged in the manufacture of sashes, doors and blinds at Cazenovia, N.Y., for a few years, and then returned to Rutland, and for 30 years conducted a photograph gallery here. In 1861 he enlisted in a Vermont regiment, and after serving a year he was wounded and subsequently discharged. He was a member of Roberts post. He was long a prominent member of the Methodist church of this city, serving on its official board for more than 25 years. His death and that of H.S. Howe are the first that occurred on this board for 19 years. His contributions to the support of the church were liberal and extended over many years. He leaves a wife, a son, C.V.N. Nichols, and a daughter, Mrs. H.A. Hall of this city. A brother, George C. Nichols of Cazenovia, N.Y., and a sister, Mrs. Delia P. Torrey of Lebanon, N.Y., also survive him.
The funeral will be held at his home on Prospect street tomorrow afternoon at 2.30 o'clock.
